Facebook has more than 500 million active users and and is in millions of homes around the world.
On November 6, 2006, Facebook launched their advertising program and Mark Zuckerberg made the following announcement “For the last hundred years media has been pushed out to people, but now marketers are going to be a part of the conversation.
And they’re going to do this by using the social graph in the same way our users do.”
While Facebook ads work much the same as other PPC or Pay Per Click ads do, there are a few significant differences.
The way Facebook is unique is that it allows you to narrow viewing of your ads to be seen so that they are seen by more specific demographics.
Some of the other factors that make Facebook advertising special is:
- On Facebook, targeting with keywords is optional and
- Facebook ads are delivered directly to your target audience right on their profile pages
And compared to Google ads, there are fewer advertisers on Facebook which means less competition for your business.
This is very important because that means it can cost you less per click and yield you a better return on your investment.
Another advantage is that people can “Like” your advertisements, which in turn can produce a snowball effect and give you free advertising.
If you’re seeking to drive traffic to your website, Facebook Fan Page, Profile Page event, group or application, Facebook Advertising may be your ideal solution!
Over the next couple of weeks I will walk you through the five steps that you will need in order to equired to plan and profit from Facebook Advertising.
Then I’ll wrap it up with a quick list of tips that you can use to maximize your Facebook Advertising success! So let’s get started!
Here’s a couple of questions you need to ask yourself…
Step # 1: What Are Your Goals?
One of the first steps to a successful Facebook advertising campaign is to sit down and think about what you want to accomplish so the first question I’m going to ask you is what are your goals?
And what I mean by that is what are you trying to accomplish by advertising your business, product or services on Facebook?
Do you want to:
- Drive traffic to your website?
- Drive traffic to your Facebook profile or Fan Page?
- Acquire more leads?
- Increase sales for a specific product or service?
- Generate awareness and increase exposure?
You may want to achieve all of these goals, however it’s important to be as specific as possible in what you’re trying to do.
This will help you create the most effective ad campaign possible.
It will also help you make the right decisions when establishing your budget and choosing your audience specifications and the end you’ll get a higher return on your investment.
Step # 2: Who is Your Audience?
One of the most wonderful things about Facebook advertising is that you can be really specific about who you’re targeting.
Facebook users provide Facebook, and their friends, with an abundance of information about themselves. So when I say specific I mean really mean detailed stuff here!
We’re talking about their favorite books, favorite colors, interests, religion, political views, favorite quotes, the city they live in and even the city they were born.
We know if they are married, if they have kids… I mean this list goes on and on! This information is like a gold mind if used right for advertisers.
So with all of that information being freely given out on Facebook you can target very specific demographic audiences.
When you set up your advertising campaigns you’ll be able to choose who you want to see your advertisement, the location, keywords, likes and interests, language, education, workplace, birth dates, age, connections, friends, and even relationship status.
For example, if you wanted to target all of the single women aged 25-35 in North Carolina, it’s an easy task! All you’d have to do is put in the information.
One of the things about Facebook advertising is it’s important to be specific about your audience when creating your ads.
The information will also help you produce specific copy for a highly targeted audience. For example, you could create an ad for single women and one for married women.
This specificity helps you boost click throughs and maximize your budget.
Since Facebook has more than 500 million active users that range in age from pre-teens to senior citizens, there’s a good chance the audience you’re looking for is most likely there!
Now let me warn you, before you begin creating your advertisement, decide specifically whom you’re going to advertise to.
You can always create more than one ad, so if you have a large audience, brainstorm how you can use the Facebook demographic options to narrow your focus.
In our next lesson we’ll discuss designing your advertisment and the different elements that go into it. You don’t want to miss it!

Hi Pam,
Although I am not a big fan of jumping on the bandwagon of the next best marketing method, I agree that FB offers some unique functionality that can be very helpful in allowing marketers to target within their niche.
I have tried FB advertising for a short time with some success. Thanks to your article, you’ve renewed my interest to return!
Looking forward to your coming posts!
Bob
Hi Bob!
Well I will be honest with you – I was reluctant to do any advertising on FB myself but the numbers don’t lie! Plus it’s not my only means of advertising either!
I read your story on how you and your wife was mainly advertising on google and what happened and that’s my worse fear because of how powerful FB is.
Right now they are like the the great and mighty “OZ” so I’m really careful to only spend a small amount of my budget on it but even with that I am still seeing some really decent results.
Thanks for the feedback and also the information via email!

Pam, great post. I want to begin doing some face book PPC advertising. Thanks for the break down between Google PPC and facebook. It is amazing how they can direct ads to segmented users who already have an interest in what I am offering. This will save me and other advertisers mega bucks which can be allocated to other sectors of the business. I Can’t wait to hear part 2 of your post.
Hi BJ!
Thanks for stopping by! I ran a couple of ads myself recently using a CPM campaign and have had some pretty amazing results!
Here’s the link to Part-2 and the rest of the series is also available as well!
Let me know if you have any questions about getting your campaign off the ground!
Pam
I’ve been meaning to try out FB advertising. I’ve heard so many people rant about it and how amazing it is. I’m not really a fan of paid advertising but I wouldn’t mind trying out Facebook.
Hey Kevin!
Thanks for dropping by! I handle a lot of marketing and advertising for my clients and right now Facebook advertising is one of the most targeted and cost effective ways to go. Plus it’s really easy to implement. I’m looking forward to networking with you and learning more about the services you provide!
Pam
Hey Pam, I tried facebook ppc a couple of months ago and will be using it again. I like the fact that you can narrow down the demographic that you want to market to. I’m definitely looking forward to your future posts on facebook advertising!
Hi Sherman!
Thanks for dropping by. For the most part I have grown my networking page organically but started looking into Facebook Advertising at the request of my clients. After a little bit of tweaking, I have found a way to get some pretty decent results using a really small budget!
I also love that you can narrow down your demographics and really go after a niche audience. This will come in handy for some of the projects I have coming up in the next couple of months!
Thanks for taking the time to read my blog. If you have any questions regarding the campaign I ran, just inbox me on – you guessed it! Facebook! ;o)
