Link Building – The First Steps

So I got a few questions about the post I placed the other day “7 Ways To Attract Incoming Links” and most people wanted more information so I’m starting with the basics.

Link building is one way to increase visibility for your website. If you have never tried this tactic, here are some steps you can take to try it out for yourself.

Remember: There is no technique that is foolproof. All take trial and error. But, if you do your homework first, the results are almost guaranteed to be better than going in unprepared. All we can say is give it a try and see how it works for you.

What Is Link Building?

This is a way to build backlinks from other places on the internet to your website. Backlinks are the links that you are allowed to place on those sites that others can see and click on and then be magically transported to your website. Once there, hopefully they will buy or sign up or whatever your call to action is.

There are a few things to consider when building links. For one, all websites are not the same. You can contact hundreds of people and get links from all of them, but if they are not good quality websites you could be in for trouble.

Check out the pages first and see if they are even relevant to your niche market. Some sites may not be popular or have the type of traffic that can make a change in your business. Bad links are not worth the effort that you are putting into getting them. Also, poor quality websites may sink your site instead of increasing its ranking.

Ways To Build Links

Start with article submissions. Using your expertise and knowledge to draw traffic in is an easy shot. If you are having trouble writing your thoughts in a coherent and cohesive manner, then hire a ghostwriting service to do it for you. They can also rewrite articles for you for multiple submissions at the same time. Be sure to include SEO with relevant keywords that will be picked up by search engines.

Be a consistent and reliable blog commenter. You can keep up with your favorite blogs using an RSS feeder. Leave truly relevant comments for blog posts. Allow your website link to lead other readers there back to your website.

How about forums? Anyone can post a comment of one or two words but for this to work you need to get involved with the conversation. Forum moderators can tell if you are just posting to have your website link seen. Most forums prohibit blatant advertising for you, but a bio line is typically allowed.

Trackbacks are links that refer to your blog posting on another relevant blog site. When someone reads the comment by the blog owner and clicks on it, they are taken to your blog entry on your site, building a link.

So I am still learning and practicing a lot of these skills myself so I am learning a lot!  If you want to increase your presence in the right places on the internet then you really need to think about link building!

Another home run article Pam. Thanks for sharing your expertise, it is much appreciated. Given the activity that occurs in social media, it is challenging to keep up with all the “how-to’s” but you have condensed this information into an easy to follow format.

How did you get started in social media?

    • Pam Lawhorne

      Hey Jaclyn!

I have an self-employed for more than 16 years. I originally started out as a real estate investor and that led to me starting an investment company. Then from there came a mortgage company. Then a real estate company… and along the way a marketing company to handle it all.

While doing all of this I started doing personal development training… but then the mortgage and real estate industry collapsed and I lost EVERYTHING I had been working years to build and had to shut my companies down. :o(

Shortly afterwards I regrouped and began to focus on building my marketing company. I developed a blueprint and took everything I knew and went FULL FORCE and things slowly began to happen!

And the rest is HERstory as they say! ;o)

Thanks for asking. It’s actually a little more detailed that that and I’d be happy to share with you if you like.

    Hi Pam…
Your article is really kick. I have two favorites link building strategies, article submission (article marketing) and blog commenting. For article submission I use article distribution service, so it makes me so easy. A I also leave comment to the blog which have similar topic. I prove both can increase traffic.

      Hi Ery,

Thanks so much for the response. The article marketing I do on a regular but the blog commenting is something I really need more of and need to do more of! Another “to do” to add to my list! lol.

Thanks for the feedback and btw – nice looking site!
